Learning Design Conversation (LDC) on October 18, 2018
This is the start of an ongoing and exciting faculty conversation series about course design, inspired by L Dee Fink’s (2013) book, Creating Significant Learning Experiences. One of the key components of good teaching, besides knowledge of the subject matter, teacher-student interactions, and course management is Design of Instruction. Learning Design is a skill that relies on different conceptual tools – and as with any skill, it requires practice, repetition, engagement, purposefulness and feedback.
Paradigm Shift. How does the new taxonomy of significant learning compare to Bloom’s revised taxonomy, traditionally used in Higher Education? Do we need to re-imagine our course goals or learning objectives in lieu of the new taxonomy, and if so how? Where does art and design education, specifically learning goals for studio work and creative expression fit on the new taxonomy?
