Thank you Professor Kit White for your many years of service and we wish you all the best in your retirement!

A Tribute by Professor Michael Brennan: I don’t think any words can truly measure the direct and positive impact you’ve had on hundreds of young artists over many years. That is our job here, and all of us know that you have done that tricky work exceptionally well. I have heard firsthand, again and again over many years, so many testimonials from your students, graduate and undergraduate, about how your mentorship helped them become better artists—more specifically, how you helped them become the artists they wanted to be, and most likely were meant to be, but were unable to find themselves without your gentle but incisive guidance.

Not every professor has the skill set to unlock much artistic potential in the short time we are given, weeks, semesters. We measure all kinds of things in academia, but what outcome is more vital to the program, more central to our role as professors, and yet more intangible than accounting for the broadening and reshaping of individual artists? You are leaving Pratt, but your living legacy thrives, still germinating in the art of every former student you have so wisely counseled.

All of us at Pratt are happy for you, excited about your decision to dedicate more of your time to your own art—something you have clearly earned—but we are also greatly saddened to lose such an estimable colleague! We will never know another professor of your charm, dedication, and wisdom. It’s a tremendous loss for our department, and yet we celebrate this next chapter in your life with you, knowing that you gave Fine Arts your best, recognizing your very high standard of service, and acknowledging that your role as a professor at Pratt has made all the difference in the lives of everyone you encountered here.

Teaching is considered a “noble profession.” I’m not sure nobility is a quality foremost in our minds as we shuffle between Main Campus and Pfizer Studios, or sit round tables in committee meetings, and yet you gave us a visible example of that key character all along.

Best of luck Kit!
